3 Important Guidelines for Diabetes Mellitus (complete guidelines are available in the ICD 10 CM Code Book) Type of diabetes: The patient’s age is not the only determinant, although most type 1 diabetes increases the condition before puberty. For this reason, type 1 diabetes is also called juvenile diabetes. Undocumented type of diabetes: If the type of diabetes is not documented in the medical record, the category E11, type 2 diabetes mellitus is the default. For example, if DM is written on the receipt, code E11.9, uncomplicated type 2 diabetes mellitus should be given. It is important that providers regularly document the type of diabetes in order to report the appropriate code.
