The cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD) replaces days of strict keto consumption and high carbohydrate intake. For example, with CKD, you should eat 20-50 grams of carbohydrates for five consecutive days a week, followed by a low-carb diet (over 100 grams per day) for two days.

Athletes who follow an intense and vigorous training schedule are best suited for this method. The goal of CKD is to completely deplete muscle glycogen between carbohydrate loads, while TKD aims to maintain muscle glycogen at moderate levels.

If you’re eating four or more times a week, you may need more protein on your keto meal plan. While a standard ketogenic diet typically limits protein to 20% of total calories, a high-protein diet (HPKD) allows for 35% of all calories to come from protein.

The proportion of macronutrients in a ketogenic diet is very important. You’ll eat plenty of healthy fats and proteins, and your total carbohydrate intake will be kept to a minimum. Macro ratios for low-carb and low-fat diets typically look like this (for simplicity, the percentages below are based on the standard ketogenic diet approach):
